Is CRYSTAL BUDDHA: Sake, Drugs & Rock'n'Roll in Tokyo an urban fiction book? I'm not sure really. When I started writing it, I didn't know that I was going to be writing something that might fall into the urban fiction genre. I didn't even know that such a genre existed. All I knew was that I was writing a story about everyday, down-to-earth people that takes place in realistic locations in the city of Tokyo, Japan. It's certainly an urban setting, so I suppose that does make it an urban novel. Frankly though, I'd rather let the readers and the critics decided such things as genre. To me, telling the story is the most important thing. I suppose that many great authors already know their genre when they start writing. Stephen King knows that he's setting out to write a horror novel, and Tom Clancy knows that he's setting out to write an action thriller. I find that genre isn't so clean cut in my books though as I'm working with realistic people in realistic, everyday scenarios. There might be thrills, there might be humour, there might be romance, and there might be tragedy. Therefore, "urban fiction" is probably about the best genre that I can think of... apart from "realistic fiction" or "street literature", perhaps. CRYSTAL BUDDHA: Sake, Drugs & Rock'n'Roll in Tokyo is actually a combination of two of my favourite things: music and Japan. The story of a naive London rock band's trip to Tokyo, Japan to record an album and play a series of gigs was one that captivated me. Tokyo has a fabulous live music scene around Shibuya, but also has a darker side in Shinjuku's notorious "adult entertainment" district of Kabukicho. This contrast of locations within the big city gives an interesting edge to the story of Crystal Buddha, and I hope that it'll strike a chord with those who live in or have visited Tokyo as well as those who haven't. As I'm primarily based in the UK, my work on CRYSTAL BUDDHA: Sake, Drugs & Rock'n'Roll in Tokyo required me to travel to Tokyo to research some of the locations around Shinjuku and Shibuya. I also took that opportunity to write some of the book whilst fully immersed in the Tokyo atmosphere as I stared out over the Shinjuku skyline. I really do hope that you enjoy reading CRYSTAL BUDDHA: Sake, Drugs & Rock'n'Roll in Tokyo as much as I enjoyed researching and writing it. Jason Webb | |

In the summer of 2009, Jack Dempsey took his band, Crystal Buddha, to Tokyo, Japan to record an album and play some gigs.
